February’s Messy Church was an Awesome Experience!

This month’s activities were based on the story of Jacob’s Ladder (Genesis 28). Jacob was running away from his brother, who had every right to be angry with him, and he needed to stop for a rest in the desert. He dreamt of a ladder with a constant stream of angels going up and down between heaven and earth, with God at the top. God used the dream to get through to Jacob (the dad of Joseph of Technicolour Dreamcoat fame) that he had to turn his life round to be more the sort of person God wanted him to be.

Jacob realised something really special had happened here, so he turned the rock he had used as a pillow into a pillar to mark this awesome location – and yes! The word awesome is actually in the Bible! So we talked about places that are special to us as we painted rocks and drew pictures of awesome places. Ladders obviously featured in several of our activities and games – ladder hopscotch for instance – but the favourite activity had to be the edible one. Imagine a Curly Wurly “ladder “ with attached Jelly Baby “angels” placed in a piece of chocolate cake (to represent the earth)  and a piece of marshmallow “cloud” on the top!

Promising to change something about ourselves for God was another discussion point, based around making “Pinky Promises”, i.e. tying a ribbon or piece of string around the little finger of a cut out hand shape to remind us of the promise made.

Thanks are due once again to all who work so hard to make Messy Church possible. The next one is on Saturday March 24th 3-5pm in the Memorial Hall, so do pass on the invitation to any families with young children that you might know – we’d love to see them there.

Messy Church is organised by Llangollen Cytun,  (Churches Together).
